These are not bracelets, these are hair ties, use them accordingly.
Following a recent case in Kentucky, doctors have claimed that wearing head ties on your wrist could cause severe infections, some even life-threatening, depending on the severity of the infection itself.
The case from Kentucky focused on a young woman who usually wore a hair tie around her wrist. While moving, the patient in question noticed a red and painful inflammation on her wrist, urging her to search for medical attention. The doctor who treated the patient has claimed that the infection was caused by bacteria who infiltrated the woman’s system through a small cut made by the hair tie.
The woman eventually was rushed to an emergency room in order to surgically remove the inflammation after the antibiotic treatment failed to produce results. The doctors found that three strains of bacteria where located in her blood stream with the point of origination being her wrist. If this treatment would have been delayed, the life of the patient would have been in grave danger, as the likelihood of her developing blood poisoning was extremely high.
Because of the materials from which fair ties are usually manufactured from, they can easily become complex breeding grounds for various bacteria. One of the bacteria found in the wound originated from the patient’s mouth, making it extremely dangerous. A human bite is extremely deadly to other humans, the only one being immune is the individual himself. This would not have been a problem if the other two bacteria weren’t part of the infection as well, modifying the infection in order to spread rapidly through the patients system.
Even if infections caused by hair ties are extremely rare, they could still happen, especially if the person in question has a minor cut or laceration around the wrist, making the bacteria come in contact directly with the blood stream. This is why doctors have advised the general public to wash their hair ties on a day to day basis in order to circumvent this phenomenon.
Hair ties could also lead to blood circulation problems if they are too tight, leading to an over vascularisation of the area which makes bacteria more likely to infect the patient through skin contact or through the pores.
If such an inflammation occurs or in a worst case scenario, an infection, people should go immediately to a doctor due to the fact that this type of bacterial infection has an extremely rapid rate of progressing through the body.
Because wearing head ties on your wrist could cause severe infections, you should try using them just to tie your hair and if you don’t, put them in your pocket. Even if infections are scarce, it’s better to be safe rather than sorry after the fact was already consumed and you are rushed to surgery in order for doctors to remove the inflammated area.
