We all know that it is important to eat fruits and veggies at least 5 times every day. This helps us stay healthy and have more energy. Of course, it can also help us lose weight if we replace meat with vegetables.
A new research also says that it can even prevent premature death. Apparently, 10 portions of fruits and veggies a day might prevent premature death. The researchers mentioned that it is important to follow this rule and eat 800 grams of vegetable and fruits if we want to have a healthy heart and to avoid premature death.
This research is actually a meta-analysis of almost 100 studies. The meta-analysis discovered that this amount of fruits and vegetables can save the lives of 7.8 million people every year. This number does not include the people who are dying from starvation every year.
Despite the fact that doctors recommend 5 portions of fruits and vegetables, this study suggests that people should double the portions in order to have more benefits. Although it might seem like a lot of food, fruits and veggies are digested very quickly and you can eat as many as you like.
The researchers that conducted this study mentioned that they wanted to find out the exact amount of veggies and fruits that can help people fight diseases and even premature death. They said that 10 portions is the lucky number. They mentioned that 5 portions are enough but 10 are better for us.
If you don’t like eating fruits and vegetable this much, you can start by eating 200 grams a day. It is known that it decreases the risk of heart disease by 16%, the risk of stroke by 18%, and the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 13%.
After you got used to eating 200 grams a day, you can start eating more and more until you reach the limit of 10 portions. For reference, a fruit portion is a banana or an orange. When it comes to vegetable 3 spoons of boiled veggies are considered a portion.
The researchers mentioned that it is better to eat fruit than to take vitamins. This is because fruits contain those vitamins and our bodies assimilate them quicker. Also, fruits are known for decreasing the risk of heart disease but vitamins don’t have the same effect.
What is your opinion about this study? Do you think that 10 portions a day can prevent premature death?
