In spite of the fact that the state of Oregon has legalized medical marijuana on its grounds, it seems that local television is still not ready to broadcast marijuana commercials, as they are still viewed as being highly controversial.
KATU is an affiliate of big time TV channel ABC and it had agreed to broadcast a 31-second ad for the Oregon Medical Marijuana Business Conference (OMMBC) that will be held on the 12th and the 13th of September and that will offer people extensive information regarding the current state and federal laws regarding the use of medical marijuana, alongside the findings of the most recent research conducted on the matter.
The ad was completely innocent, as it promoted the general public’s awareness on the matter of marijuana, that has been regarded as a tabu topic, due to the fact that it was an illegal substance.
Getting people to understand the beneficial aspects that cannabis can bring about, but also the risks that come with consuming it is actually the first step to a fruitful experience for those who are in need of the substance.
However, it seems that KATU had to reconsider broadcasting the commercial for OMMBC, because it caused a true media frenzy as being a historic moment. It was supposed to be the first ever marijuana themed advertisement to be broadcasted on television, but unfortunately KATU caved under the pressure that the media has created and eventually decided to retract its acceptance of the OMMBC ad.
The main reason behind this retraction was the fact that while medical marijuana is legal in the state of Oregon it remains illegal according to federal law. Thus, KATU executives decided to play it safe and let some other network make history in relation to marijuana in their stead.
The most disappointing aspect is the fact that such occurrences can only be fixed by presenting the population with the correct information about cannabis, but without the contribution of the mass media, it will remain quite the difficult task, because leaving it all to the internet only leads to selective awareness.
It remains to be seen how long will medical marijuana continue to be viewed as a tabu topic, but one thing has been made clear by KATU’s decision though and that is that there is a long road ahead of those who want to make cannabis mainstream.
