Trayvon Martin is history now. He was shot and killed in Sanford in Florida two years ago. However, his name is being used in the election and Trayvon is an election issue between Kay Hagan, the Democratic candidate and the GOP challenger Thom Tillis.
In a radio advertisement being broadcast these days, Thom Tillis is being slammed on issues concerning African American community. He is also been bashed for his stance on raising of minimum wages.
In one such protest on wage hike issues Trayvon Martin was shot dead and the issue is being highlighted in the campaign. The reason for which the name of Trayvon Martin is being used can be well understood. Democrats need support from African American community if they need to hold on to the senate seat.
The party has been working earnestly in this regard since January and has registered over 30,000 African Americans to the party fold. The current campaign can be seen in this light. The party wants each of these African Americans to vote in the current elections and thus the ferocity of the radio campaign can be well understood.
Thorn Tillis, the GOP challenger is meanwhile facing battle on multiple fronts. His backing by American Legislative Exchange Council has also come under scanner in North Carolina. Tillis has close association with American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and had been named as legislator of the year in 2011 by ALEC.
With elections due soon, the war of words is warming up and it would be interesting to see who makes it to the senate finally.
