The study found that men watch more porn than women.
According to a recent paper published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, porn users can be divided into three broad categories, depending on the amount of time they spend watching adult content videos. The Canadian scientists drew the profile of each category, presenting the ups and downs of regular porn consumption.
The study, entitled Profiles of Cyberpornography Use and Sexual Well-Being in Adults, analyzed a sample of 830 adults who completed an online survey. The questions focused on issues like sexual well-being, the amount of weekly time spent watching porn, sexual satisfaction, avoidance, dysfunction, and compulsivity.
From the point of view of the time spent on online streaming services that offer adult entertainment videos, the researchers found that there are three types of porn consumers: the compulsive, the recreational, and the distressed.
The Distressed
Distressed users spend approximately 17 minutes per week watching porn videos. Usually, this group is made of individuals who feel ashamed of their habits, wanting to “get them over with quickly.”
Researchers note that the users that fall in the distressed category are the most likely to harbor feelings of shame and disgust after watching adult videos.
The Recreational
Recreational users dedicate approximately 24 minutes a week to watching pornographic videos. It is the amplest group as it includes women and individuals in long-term relationships.
Compared to others, the members of this group are more likely to feel sexually satisfied, have less frequent episodes of sexual compulsivity, dysfunction, and avoidance.
The Compulsive
Compulsive users spend up to 110 minutes per week watching porn. According to the researchers, the individuals in this group are mostly males who have higher chances of suffering from sexual dysfunction or feeling sexually unsatisfied.
While the survey was only filled out by adults, chances are that most male teenagers fit in the latter category as most adult content streaming services don’t feature an efficient age filter.
Why Is It Relevant?
Marie-Pier Vaillancourt-Morel, the lead author of the study, declared that the main objective of the paper was to demonstrate that all porn consumers are
“a heterogeneous population in which distinct subgroups experience quite different sexual outcomes.”
According to Pornhub, people spent a total of 4.6 billion hours watching adult videos in 2016. The study comes to prove that the majority of the individuals who contributed to this impressive record are functioning adults who grew tired of reading 50 Shades of Grey.
