We can say that without a shadow of a doubt that the life of a teacher is hard. Things get uglier when it comes to teaching young children. While most of the teachers out there do whatever they can in order to broaden the pupil’s intellectual horizon, there are those who refrain from teaching certain subjects. According to a recent survey, teaching about climate change is too mainstream.
Before taking a look at the numbers provided by the survey, we should state the fact that the subject is still under a lot of debate, not controversial. Although there is still room for more research, a vast majority of scientists agree that the causes that led to global warming are intimately related to the human intervention.
Back to the survey itself. Now, when it comes to the academical view, apparently things are pretty clear. According to the latest studies on global warming, it looks like approximately 97.4 percent of researchers believe that the phenomenon is and was caused by the burning of fossil fuels.
While this is a scientifically proven fact, it would seem that most teachers have the habit of keeping information global warming-related information out of the classrooms.
According to this survey, approximately 12 percent of the candidates declared that they refuse to believe that man was behind global warming and that they teach young children to believe that this is a natural phenomenon. On the other hand, more than 31 percent of the teachers, wanting to take the high road, declared that the subject is still somewhat controversial, but they still teach the ABC of global warming to their students.
Pressures from the outside can also be considered a factor in this matter. The survey revealed that 4.4 percent of teachers are actually pressured by other quarters into teaching the children about global warming.
And there is the vast majority of 68 percent who believe that man is indeed behind global warming. The survey also revealed that not enough hours are allocated to the subject. Over the course of an academical year, a school teacher would lecture about global warming for an hour or two at most.
Moreover, it seems that even the academical background of the teacher matters. While half of the teachers declared that they do not have the necessary background to teach about global warming, approximately two-thirds of them declared that they will be happy to teach the kids about this phenomenon if the curriculum allows it.
Teaching about climate is too mainstream, considering the fact that some of the teacher either don’t have a knack for it or they do not believe that man was behind global warming.
