The first rule of the Internet is that there are no rules. You will quickly learn that if you don’t pick up the trade quick enough, you might end up without any money left in your bank account or with a stolen identity.
A similar event occurred at Snapchat. According to an official report released by the social media giant, several employees, and former employees might be at risk after the company was involved in a phishing scam.
The report mentions that the source of this mishap has been traced down to an employee who opened a fraudulent email. It would seem that the phony email was sent by the company’s CEO. Thinking that nothing could go wrong, the employee quickly opened the email in order to see its contents.
According to his or her statement (the company did not disclose the identity of the employee), the company’s CEO requested the payroll information for several employees and a couple of former employees. Not knowing that it was a scam, the employee sent the details.
Within a matter of moments, the company realized that it had fallen prey to a phishing attack. Although Snapchat declared that the internal database wasn’t breached during the phishing attack, the payroll sheets contain pretty sensitive information like the employee’s address, name, and bank account.
Fortunately, the social media giant took all the necessary steps in order to protect its employees and former employees. After the incident, Snapchat informed the FBI about the data theft and contacted all former employees in order to explain the whole situation.
In a blog post, the company conveys its formal apologies to its current and former employees for this mishap. Furthermore, Snapchat also declared that for the next two years it will offer identity theft insurance and continuous monitoring.
Furthermore, Snapchat also seized this opportunity in order to talk about the dangers of online scams and to state that all current and future employees will have to go through a rigorous online security training program in order to make sure that there will be no more incidents.
Up until now, there were no incidents related to the leaked payroll, but not even the FBI can say for sure how extensive the damage was.
