For those that still love to “Feel the Bern,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) made an appearance on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Mayer” on Friday. Sanders had some heat for President Trump. He accused him of leading with “strong authoritarian tendencies.” And he said that Trump, the former real estate mogul, ”kind of likes” despots.
“We have a president who has strong authoritarian tendencies; who wants to, everyday, undermine American democracy,” Sanders said.
“He Kind of Likes These Authoritarian Leaders”
”In my state and all over this country you have men and women who have fought and died to defend American democracy, and this guy looks all over the world and he kind of likes these authoritarian leaders.”
Those who oppose the president point to his unusual attachment to autocratic leaders, like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. They note that Trump typically does not discuss human rights with foreign counterparts. This is a very different posture than past presidents.
Trump has been accused of leading like an autocrat himself. His critics point to his frequent attacks on political opponents, the news media and government institutions, like the Justice Department.
