The Democratic Party is for the most part leaderless and the 2020 presidential primary race is still a long way off. In this vacuum, one person has served as a rallying point for dispirited Democrats: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Who would have guessed?
Ginsburg seems like a strange figure to provide hope to Democrats, who have been forced to watch over the past few years as almost everything forged by former president Obama has been dismantled by Trump.
Ginsburg’s rise to the political spotlight began during the 2016 election campaign, when she broke the political stance usually favored by Supreme Court justices, speaking out bluntly about her concerns regarding Trump.
“I can’t imagine what this place would be — I can’t imagine what the country would be — with Donald Trump as our president,” Ginsburg told The New York Times in a July 2016 interview in her Supreme Court chambers. “For the country, it could be four years. For the court, it could be — I don’t even want to contemplate that.” Ginsburg doubled down on those comments in a subsequent interview with CNN, calling Trump a “faker,” and adding: “”He has no consistency about him. He says whatever comes into his head at the moment. He really has an ego.”
Trump is a widely known counter-puncher. He fired back on Twitter:
“Justice Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me. Her mind is shot – resign!”
Later, the Supreme Court Justice said she regretted her overtly political comments: “On reflection, my recent remarks in response to press inquiries were ill-advised and I regret making them.”
Ginsburg represents everything Democrats love. She skipped Trump’s 2018 State of the Union speech, and the party celebrated her unwillingness to bend to the domineering President.
She announced at an event in Washington in mid-August, that she had “about at least five more years” left on the court, Democrats shouted their approval. Ginsburg, at 85, is the oldest member of the court.
It seems that at a time when so few people will stand up to Trump’s bullying style of leadership, a frail octogenarian woman has filled the void and basically modeled that she is not afraid of the president at all.
