According to recent studies, the Neanderthals started to create pieces of jewelry from bones, teeth, talons and other materials about 130,000 years ago.
The researchers recently studied a piece of jewelry discovered about 100 years ago. The piece was made of eight eagle talons and archaeologists noticed that the talons had some cut markers on them, which means that the claws were actually carved into by someone.
The experts concluded that the decorative pieces are the works of art of Neanderthals who lived more than 130,000 years ago.
The new study on Neanderthal jewelry was published by the researchers in the journal PLOS ONE and is called ”Evidence for Neanderthal Jewelry: Modified White –tailed Eagle Claws at Krapina”.
The study says that Neanderthal ancestors who populated what is now known as Croatia were crafting jewelry long before the modern man appeared.
A while back, scientists believed that the Neanderthals were actually ignorant cavemen who did not last long after Homo sapiens appeared. But recent research shows that the Neanderthals were not as simple as previously thought.
The Neanderthals are actually the closest relative of the modern man. According to the experts, we all share some Neanderthal genes, which means that Homo sapiens interbred with them at one point.
Recent research revealed that Neanderthals actually made buildings, created tools that were fairly complex and manufactured boats.
Also, the Neanderthals used to bury their dead, created artistic pieces and used feathers to adorn themselves.
The Neanderthal jewelry made of eight eagle talons was discovered more than 100 years ago in a sandstone site. Archaeologists say that the jewelry was created by the Krapina Neanderthals.
Although the researchers did not notice it at first, four of the eight claws had multiple cut marks that were not natural, which made the experts believe that the claws were actually part of a necklace or a bracelet of some sort.
The site where the Neanderthal jewelry was found is dated back to an interglacial period, somewhere between 120,000 and 130,000, as per the researchers.
