Virtual reality is the new it thing in technology. More and more developers made their own virtual reality product that promises to offer everything the users want. From Oculus, made by Facebook, to the PlayStation VR that is going to be released by Sony, they all cost hundreds of dollars.
Despite the fact that these products have great features and bring new updates to the world, not many people are interested in spending so much money on this type of device.
In only one year, the developers made a lot of progress by turning these products from hypothetical to real ones. Although they made so much progress, the market is not yet prepared to have them. This was the topic that made the investors and developers gather around in Bellevue at the Immersive Technology Summit.
In order to show that the release of these virtual reality products was too early, many technologists compared virtual reality to the release of the iPhone. They said that despite the fact that iPhone was great, just like these virtual reality devices are, they need to introduce some known software like Snapchat and Instagram in order for people to spent so much money on them.
This is why many virtual reality games that were made for these devices seem more like a demonstration than a regular device. This also explains why people are not that interested in buying something that is still in the demonstrations period.
Another problem is the way that these games are designed. They have some problems that make people think twice before buying one of the virtual reality products that they tested. For instance, Batman: Arkham VR has brought up a great sensation, but the interaction with the world feels limited sometimes. In order to make people interested, they need to make some changes.
Another problem is that people don’t feel close to these new devices because they don’t have the features and software that people are used to. If developers want people to get attached to virtual reality they need to bring something familiar to the users.
At the Bellevue conference more technologists mentioned that developers need to give the users more time to get used to virtual reality and not to expect them to make this type of investment without loving the device.
