International Data Corporation is a research firm that has just intercepted good news for the tech world. The personal computer industry has finally managed to get away from its five-year strike of weak performance. The market has recorded the first positive quarterly growth. However, the improvement is more like a symbolic event. The total gain is less than 1% increase since the previous year. This reinstates the trend of weak demand.
The Personal Computer Industry Shipped 60.3 Million Assets This Year
On Tuesday, IDC stated several facts about the personal computer industry that disrupt a five-year-old trend of poor performance. Thus, during the first three months of the year, the manufacturers shipped a total of 60.3 million products. By comparison, during the same period in the previous year, this sector recorded a number of 59.9 million shipped items. As a consequence, the latest financial quarter is also the first period of growth for the industry since the year of 2012.
Another research company, Gartner Inc, has studied the matter. The second opinion backed up the shy trend of improvement. However, neither one of them believes that this is a sufficient growth to make up for a slow consumer demand.
HP Was Reinstated as the First Brand Chosen by Consumers
The personal computer industry was impaired by modern people’s interest in mobile gadgets. They showed numerous times a tendency towards internet on the go rather than the reliability yet immobile nature of a PC. Consumers’ main goal is to stay connected to email all the time, which only tablets and smartphones can satisfy this need. However, the latest technology made way to more powerful products. Companies expect an increased desire to replace old hardware with top-notch equipment that enjoys a sleek design as well.
To confirm this improving trend, almost all major brands recorded a higher profit during this period of time. HP Inc. regained the first position as the most popular company with 22% increase in market share. The runner up is Lenovo Group Ltd. with an uptick to 20.4% while Dell Technology managed to increase its value by 16%. On the other hand, Apple recorded a growth of 7% from 6.7%.
However, the personal computer industry might have even more to suffer from in the future. For instance, the first quarter in 2017 registered a price surge for PC components. This might impair the consumers’ desire to purchase new equipment unless it is out of necessity. The reason behind this price hike is a shortage of memory components.
