On Tuesday night, a female passenger was dragged off a Southwest Airlines flight after she complained about having a deadly allergy to dogs and asked the crew to remove two dogs from the flight.
Instead, two officers arrived and removed her from the plane, but the incident sparked a huge backlash with people accusing them of being too aggressive to the passenger. The airline-passenger meltdown was captured by other passengers with cellphones.
One of the videos shows the woman yelling at officers asking them not to touch her. A few moments later, she adds that her father is having surgery the next day. She also accuses the officers of ripping her pants and says she needs to fix them.
The three responding officers tried to negotiate with the reluctant passenger. After her refusal, they wrapped their arms around her and dragged her off the aircraft.
Southwest later confirmed that the woman had told the crew that the dogs could spark a deadly allergic reaction but she couldn’t provide a medical certificate to prove her condition.
Under the airline’s rules, a passenger without a certificate can be removed from a plane if they claim they may have a dangerous allergic reaction to one of the pets on board. The crew reportedly tried to explain the rules to the woman but to no avail.
The passenger refused to deplane even when the law enforcement officers showed up.
Southwest publicly apologized for the way the incident was handled and the fact that the woman had to be removed from the airplane.
One of the passengers that recorded the woman’s ordeal said that at one point, she asked for some shots to prevent her allergic reaction. The crew told the woman that she could get treatment off the aircraft, but she refused to leave.
Witnesses said police officers were maybe “overly aggressive” but the woman wasn’t cooperative either.
