The cops from New York are now equipped with a Windows Phones. After years and years, the Police Department decided that it is time to live in the technology era. Now all of the policemen have smartphones.
Despite the fact that they finally decided to make this step, they chose the most “unused” smartphones. Only 1 % of people own a Windows Phone, but the New York cops are among them.
In order to make the lives of the policemen easier Microsoft created some apps that are specially designed for these people. They also secured the devices.
The smartphones that they are using are Lumia 640 XL or Lumia 830. Both models are equipped with 911 apps. Also, all of the phones allow their users to fill out forms, receive assignments and reports.
All of these features are available on Windows 8.1, but the NYPD is testing Windows 10 as well. They want to upgrade the system once it is released. More than 35,000 officers are using these smartphones now. This makes the Windows Phone business rise.
The 911 applications are the best feature for officers because they get notifications every time something happens and they can respond faster than before. The use of smartphones can also create a better bond between the policemen and the community.
The phones also solve crimes. For instance, a man ran out of a taxi and he could have escaped if the cops wouldn’t have used their phones to locate the man. He was using the phone that he stole from the driver and he called his girlfriend. Once he made the call the cops got his phone signal from their smartphones. This is a great achievement because this man would have gotten away with this if the policemen didn’t have these phones.
The ties with the community are also going to be better. Phones have been designed to make communication easier and to strengthen the bonds between people. Well, in this case, is going to do pretty much the same. The cops will now have a personal phone that they can give to people who need to follow up on an investigation. They can also exchange numbers with the people from their community so that they can call a person for more information on a case.
