NRA chief, Wayne LaPierre, lashed out at gun control advocates.
National Rifle Association (NRA) head, Wayne LaPierre, blasted gun control advocates on Thursday over the “shameful politicization of tragedy” referring to the most recent mass school shooting in the US. According to Lapierre, the Florida shooting is now used by Democratic elites to try and erode constitutionally guaranteed gun rights.
“The elites don’t care not one whit about America’s school system and school children,” LaPierre told an annual conservative conference outside Washington.
He claims that the so-called “’socialists’ on the political left” are trying to eradicate all individual freedoms by first aiming to revoke the Second Amendment which protects the right to bear arms.
The NRA chief reinforced President Donald Trump’s idea of arming teachers to prevent school shootings. He also doubled down on the organization’s longstanding position that armed Americans are the best line of defense against deadly attacks saying that a “bad guy with a gun” can only be stopped by a “good guy with a gun”
This statement was soon tested as the Broward County sheriff said that an armed deputy was present on campus at the time of the shooting but failed to stop Nikolas Cruz from killing people on Valentine’s Day. The deputy later resigned after being suspended without pay.
According to Sheriff Scott Israel, his now-former deputy, Scott Peterson, took up a position outside and “never went in”.
The NRA set up a booth at the annual gathering of the Conservative Political Action Conference to sign up new members and recruit campaign field workers for the upcoming November mid-term elections. This is when Democrats will try to take over control of Congress from Trump’s fellow Republicans.
Federal law, as it currently is, allows anyone 18 or over to buy a gun from a private, unlicensed seller, although, there are several states that have set the minimum age at 21.
