Nowadays, the international market for mobile phone operating systems is dominated by two major players: Google`s Android and Apple`s iOS. Taking into account that these companies are the most influential in the industry, it`s hard to imagine that their monopoly will be broken very soon. However, there were several attempts until now to create a new operating system that will top the other two companies.
Such an example is Microsoft`s Windows Mobile. Unfortunately for Microsoft, their business with Windows Mobile did not grow as expected.
Launched in 2010, this new operating system was Microsoft`s reply to the unexpected growth of the smartphone industry. Their attempt to destabilize the new order in which Google and Apple are the leading players failed. As per the market research made by Gartner, in the first quarter of 2016, the market share of Microsoft`s Windows Mobile was only 0.7 percent.
According to the same study, apart from Google and Apple, no other company managed to score beyond 1 percent.
So what do the numbers look like for Apple and Android? Well, in the first quarter of 2016, Apple registered a total of 14,8 percent, which represents less than what they managed to do last year when in the same period the percentage they covered was 17.9.
At the opposite pole, Android registered an increase, managing to score 84,1 percent of the entire market share.
However, there is a trend in the mobile industry to leave Android for self-made platforms. For example, Samsung has already released its operating system called Tizen. Phones using this new operating system have already been released in some regions of the world. The phone manufacturer intends to perfect its OS and slowly to give up their dependence on Google.
In this very context, Huawei plans to build a new operating system and ditch Google`s Android, too. Due to their popularity in China, they managed to become the world`s third smartphone vendor in the world in the first quarter of 2016.
Furthermore, they have already gathered a small team of engineers, whose intention is to create the best operating system. Rumors say that the team of experts will include some former Nokia engineers.
Unfortunately, no other details about this project were made available so far.
