A woman from Minnesota, Anmarie Calgaro, is suing her child over a sex change treatment. She is also suing a number of agencies and even the country. She accuses her child because is undergoing sex change treatments without her permission. She mentioned that her child did not ask for permission and that those who treated the child should have asked for her permission.
Last year, Anmarie’s son was legally emancipated from its parents. The child that underwent sex change treatment in order to be a female has been living on her own and provided for herself. She started the sex change treatment after she was emancipated, thus legally she did not need her parent’s permission.
In Minnesota, all minors that have been emancipated from their parents can give consent on any medical service and their parents don’t need to be notified. They are treated like any other adult person that can financially support themselves.
The mother mentioned that her son did not notify her and neither did the health centers that provided the treatment. She is filing this lawsuit because she believes that her rights were not respected. She thinks that she knows what his child needs and she should have been consulted before any medical decisions were taken for her kid.
The mother doesn’t accept the decision that her child took. The woman believes that her son was born a boy and he should has kept his gender. She also mentioned that she will not give consent for her child to undergo any additional sex change treatments.
The child, on the other hand, has been providing for herself in the past year and has been living alone. The authorities and the health centers believe that it is her right to change her sex if she wants. As long as she has been emancipated from her parents legally they are not obliged to notify the parents. The mother mentioned that she is going to continue with the lawsuit because she believes that it is her right.
The person that represents Anmarie Calgaro, Erick Kaardal, said that despite the lawsuit, the mother and her child have a good relationship. He also mentioned that this is not an emancipation case because the rapport between the mother and her child is good. He believes that the agencies that treated the child did not respect the right of the parents.
