According to a study, it is never late to do physical activity if you do not want to lose your mobility. Researchers showed that seniors who keep walking and be active are at lower risk of losing their independence or developing some diseases.
We have already known that exercising has a lot of benefits when it comes to our health. However, for seniors walking can make a huge difference. Most older people are taking medications. Drugs are not the only options they have for a better life. Most of them are having side effects which only make the situation worse.
Exercise does not have to mean going to the gym or doing hard work. It is enough if you take a walk in the park to improve your mobility. Studies showed that older people with health problems proved to have a greater ability to recover than those who stayed in front of the TV. Of course, there are times when you broke a bone or have surgery and you have to take some time before getting back on your feet.
Researchers used data from 1600 adults with ages between 70 and 89 that are considered at high risk for disability because they are sedentary. The participants were asked to walk a quarter of mile in 15 minutes, which is considered to be a long time. Researchers compared those who had a regular walking program with a control group who received health education.
It seems that those involved in the walking program improved their mobility. Moreover, they reduced the amount of time spent suffering from a major mobility problem by 25 percent.
The biggest problem is that most people who are not active during middle age are having a hard time exercising when they are getting older. They fear they could fall or have pain. What they should know is that it enough to talk safely. Take your grandchild to shopping, spend some time in the park. Older people do not need a gym membership to make some difference regarding their health.
Researchers are expecting older people to meet federal health guidelines. According to them, an older adult should have at least two hours and a half of exercise every week. They have to increase their heart rate and stay active as much as they can. It is never too late to exercise.
