It is a fact that almost half of the people who come in contact with Ebola pass away. In a research conducted recently on mice, it has now emerged that surviving Ebola might have a direct relation with the genes.
People therefore have different resistance to Ebola. While some can survive it while other fall prey to the same. In this research, the scientists placed a group of genetically diverse mice to test. These were bred to test human genetic response to Ebola.
It was observed that some of the mice survived Ebola, while others were infected mildly. Some of these fell prey To Ebola and died.
Initially conducting these tests on Monkeys was also being contemplated as they are more genetically similar to humans. However, it is much expensive to conduct the same with monkeys. Moreover it is very difficult to manage monkeys as they can prove dangerous.
Testing Ebola conditions on mice does have its disadvantages. Mice do not show all the symptoms of Ebola including the most relevant hemorrhagic fever. However the mice in this case were genetically engineered to show much symptoms of Ebola so as to help the scientists come up with conclusive evidence.
In this study 40 percent of the mice affected from Ebola died of hemorrhagic fever thus confirming the notion that this fever is one of the most common factors associated with the disease and can prove dangerous in most cases.
Ebola has been a health scarce across West Africa and has been spreading to other countries too.
