Did you ever think who used the hospital bed before you? It seems that if you stay in a bed used by someone who took antibiotics, you are at higher risk of developing C. Difficile infection. This bacterium is able to cause inflammation of the colon. It seems the antibiotics can make the germ’s spread faster and persist in the same hospital bed for a long time.
Dr. Daniel Freedberg, the author of the study, explained that the antibiotics have the potential to affect the health of people even they do not receive the treatment. It seems that hospitals should really improve their sterilization procedures. Patients should come there to recover, not to feel worse. This study proves that hospitals bed should be sanitized more and it raises awareness of how the bacteria in those areas can affect the human body.
C. difficile is a common bacterium in the United States. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, thousands of people are infected and 29 000 die after being infected with it. Older adults should pay more attention because they are at higher risk than other people.
It can be unusual for antibiotics to spread bacteria, but it seems that it is possible. It does not matter if a patient is infected with C. difficile or not, the risk still exist. Researchers used more than 100 600 patient pairs to see if there is any connection between hospital bed and the bacterium. The participants spent two days in a bed in which the last patients spend at least one day. They discovered the connection in 576 pairs, which had the average time to infection around six days.
C. difficile infection can be really dangerous for our life. It starts with diarrhea, abdominal pains, fever and loss of appetite. If you want to prevent it, wash your hands as much as you can. Moreover, surfaces in hospitals, bathrooms, and kitchens should be cleaned with the right products. Another mistake most people do is to use antibiotics even their doctor did not recommend them.
There are drugs which can help people to cure from C. difficile, but it is easier to prevent the disease than to treat it. Of course, in hospitals the situation is different. The hospital staff should make sure that the surfaces are clean. There were a lot of cases when people got sick after they stayed in an hospital bed for some days.
