The summer has never been merciful with the Hollywood industry. That’s because the target public prefers to spend their few hot days outside and enjoy the sun instead of being trapped in a dark room for two hours. Nonetheless, the last few days represented the worst box office weekend Hollywood has seen since 2014. The low-quality movies and their weak revenue were responsible for this phenomenon.
The Top Spot Was Taken By One-Week-Old Movie Featuring Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds
While some people are blaming international events such as the Floyd Mayweather-Connor McGregor boxing match or the Hurricane Harvey in Texas, this weekend delivered only weak productions on the big screens. This summer has already seen the most-awaited blockbusters that fans were expecting for a long time. As a consequence, this weekend’s new releases performed poorly under the shadow of big cinematic events of the summer.
The worst box office weekend in three years had no fresh releases in its top list. Instead, the one-week production “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” featuring Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds was ranked first. The number one generated a trivial revenue of $10 million. The runner-up was another two-week-old horror movie “Annabelle: Creation” which gathered $7.4 million.
Other Experts Indicate that the $65 Million Revenue Was the Worst Box Office Weekend Since 2001
Therefore, the estimative total revenue has barely reached $65 million. This is the lowest number on record for a single weekend since at least 2014. However, other experts believe that this period had the weakest financial outcome since September 21, 2001. This was when the industry scored only $59 million as the international public was waiting for updates after the World Trade Center terrorist hits.
Among the new releases, the best performance was “Leap!” yet it hasn’t many reasons to boast over compared to a regular weekend. Given that the movie targets a wide public as it is a family-friendly production and it opened on at least 2,500 screens, a $5 million revenue is an extremely poor outcome. By comparison, same period last year the movie lineup scored twice as much as today’s top five.
