During a recent campaign gathering in Iowa, Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton seemed charmed by the idea of justice Obama. She said that she would ‘love’ to see him at SCOTUS though no one has ever proposed the idea to her.
A U.S. president is entitled to appoint up to three justices, but indeed it has never occurred to most of us that one of those justices could be the actual commander-in-chief. Clinton said Tuesday that that was a ‘great idea.’
“Wow. I love that!,”
Nevertheless, she was aware that Obama may have other things in mind to do after he leaves the White House. He could get back to teach law, retire, spend extra time with his family, and so on.
But Obama is also a ‘brilliant’ man, Clinton argued, that did a fairly good job in teaching students how to set forth an argument in a court of law when he was a law professor at the University of Chicago Law School.
She believes that he has the necessary credentials although he spent zero time on a bench. Still, this may be why she would require a Democratic majority in the Senate to make it happen.
Though Clinton’s statements may underscore the complex relationships in Washington, the idea could not be implemented without a fight. Usually, the Senate validates the President’s picks, but battles are fierce because it depends on which party runs the Senate.
But Clinton suggests that in case of Obama the process would be smoother. Nevertheless, the presidential hopeful told the voter that came up with the proposal that she would take the idea ‘under advisement.’
Still, the idea did cross Obama’s mind at least once. Two years ago, he said in a New Yorker interview that he would eagerly get back to teach law and form new generations of law school students.
Back then, he saw the role of a justice as ‘too monastic’ to his taste. He then announced plans to get outside more and know the world after having spent eight years in the ‘bubble’ called the White House.
This week, President Obama praised Clinton for how she handled her 2008 presidential race. He said that she did everything he did with a little extra. For instance, the President said that she also had to get up earlier every day to do her hair and live up to all the expectations on her shoulders.
