There is no news that healthy diets can improve the overall physical condition of a person. However, until recently all studies have focused only on the immediate benefits of food. Moreover, no study approached the connection between a healthy diet and improved mobility in older people.
Many surveys link diets with different types of diseases, warning people about the adverse effects of certain products that we can buy from the supermarkets` shelves.
Francine Grodstein, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and a reputed epidemiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, draws attention to the lack of long-term studies focusing on the benefits of establishing healthy eating habits. Her expertise is related to healthy aging (especially in women). Moreover, her previous body of research includes the analysis of different lifestyle and dietary factors, and the effects a diet can have on various aspects of women`s lives.
With her study due to appear in this July`s issue of “Journal of Nutrition”, she explained the reasons that determined her to approach the topic in a recent hospital release:
“We wanted to look at diet patterns and try to learn how our overall diet impacts our physical function as we get older.”
It is important to mention that the data collected for this survey was gathered during a period of over 15 years, from 1992 to 2008. This long-term study focused on 55,000 women. Moreover, all of these women went through a medical evaluation each four years to establish their health condition and their evolution over the years. Furthermore, all participants answered different questions related to their eating habits and their diet.
The results have shown that women having a carefully planned regime while being young reported fewer risks of developing physical disabilities at old ages. The study points out clearly that healthy diets can improve mobility.
According to the results, a reduced consumption of beverages rich in sugar and a moderate alcohol intake can lower the chances of developing physical disabilities at old ages. Moreover, the same study encourages the consumption of fruits and vegetables to achieve the best results. For example, eating vegetables and fruits like walnuts, romaine lettuce, apples and oranges can prevent the emergence of certain mobility difficulties.
As per the study, physical exercises and healthy diets can become a guarantee of a long and happy life.
