Sweden is already one of the few countries from the European Union that has already managed to undermine the oil market. Its energy industry is privatized, and it relies mostly on hydroelectricity and nuclear power. As of 2005, the crude oil accounted for only 35% of the energy supply for the entire country. In tune with this ecological direction, Sweden is ready to prepare a bill that promotes the elimination of greenhouse gases by 2045. This directive is in contradiction with the new climate change policies created under Donald Trump.
On Thursday, there were seven out of eight political parties in the Swedish parliament that accepted to do something about greenhouse gas emissions. The only party that abstained from this new law was the far-right Democrats. The new law will force governments to take a stricter stand against greenhouse gases. By 2045, they will have to set a new limit of fossil fuel use every four years. At the end of the term, the parties hope that Sweden will run 100% on clean energy.
Isabella Lovin, who is the Climate Minister in Sweden, stated that she wants her country to become free of fossil fuel. While she expects the bill to enter into effect in 2018, she still believes that the goal of the new law is doable, with even an earlier finish line than the proposed year of 2050. She named other EU states that are pro stricter climate laws such as Britain, Finland, and Denmark. One of the positive outcomes of this resolution is to present a more solid landscape for businesspersons to invest in Sweden and also enact policies that are harder to get abolished.
In comparison with this EU direction, the U.S. president Donald Trump expressed his disbelief regarding the existence of climate change. In consequence, he will continue to make the fossil fuel industries a priority in his country. As a response to these claims, Stefan Lofven, the Swedish Prime Minister, declared that greenhouse gases are a reality that can affect all people across the world. He continued by describing the clean energy strategy as a source of wealth for a nation. By replacing greenhouse gases with clean energy, a country will see a boost in numerous sectors such as health, security, and job market.
