Five years ago, Google came up with an ingenious way of implementing adds into one of the world`s most popular video watching platform, YouTube.
The program they came up with, was called TrueView adds and it meant that before playing almost every video (the more popular ones) Youtube would show a commercial.
But in order to not put viewers off by excessive infomercials, the user was able to click a “skip add” button and jump right to watching the video after 5 seconds of rolling the commercial.
As innocent as this might sound, many people were still extremely angry at this new feature of YouTube and while most of them got used to the adds, there are still those that hold a grudge for what Google did, so it will be interesting to see whether or not this will affect YouTube`s daily visitors.
Because the whole commercial isn`t shown in that small preview, Google made an arrangement with retailers, according to which Google only received payment for the add, if viewers watched the whole commercial or at least 30 seconds of it.
Therefore, it goes without saying that it is in Google`s best interest to find a way to get more people interested in viewing the whole add, so that they can charge retailers for more money.
In order to attract viewers and give retailers a better chance of selling their products, they came up with a new feature to the TrueView add that allows sellers to list the products they wish to promote either alongside or within their add.
The new feature will be named TrueView for shopping and it will mean that a “card” will appear on screen once the commercial starts playing. The card will reveal information about the product that the retailer is selling.
Google figures that if this feature is successful then they will be able to charge retailer per view.
The new TrueView feature is available both on pc and on mobile phones and it also features links to the products that are being advertised. This way shopping on YouTube has become easier than ever.
With an increase of over 50% in videos which offer product reviews, YouTube is becoming a fast growing authority on what people plan to buy and retailers are taking advantage of this.
Some of the companies that advertise their products on YouTube have said that they have witnessed a tripled revenue increase per ad impression.
Surprisingly, or not, Google talked about the new available feature for TrueView after announcing their new “buy” button which will show up in search pages.
