The sky has just received three more rings around a star. This is the first time astronomers have surprised such a moment. The formed rings are believed to mark the location where planets were born from dust and gas all around the central star. Researchers are also of the opinion that there were more than three dark rings at the beginning. However, a pair of gas giants could have swept any traces of dust away.
The studied cosmic formation goes by the name of HD 163296, and it is supposed to be 400 light years away from our planet. It can be observed by powerful technology only from the Southern hemisphere. The gas giants are still the only explanation for the inner rings.
However, scientists are now more concerned about the core of this circular phenomenon. They can’t explain why the most inner ring exhibits a greater deposit of carbon monoxide than the other two. A possible explanation might be that any planet birth hasn’t taken place. The ring is still slowly fading away. Something is removing the dust, but the gas seems to remain behind.
Exoplanets were impossible to detect 20 years ago. However, since then, the database has grown to thousands of such recorded planets thanks to the technological advancements. An exoplanet is a planet located outside our solar system and which in turn orbits its own star. Based on their 20 years of analyses, researchers discovered that they could determine the type of a new cosmic object based on its gas movement. However, this is the first time they see both gas and dust in the three dark circles.
HD 163296 has easily caught the attention of scientists due to its unusual nature. It might be a unique case ever recorded by humanity. However, its unknown properties are a matter of concern for them. The rings are placed 100 and 160 astronomical units away from their core. This is something peculiar for scientists. Before this formation, it was believed that planet formation couldn’t happen at such large distances.
The technology is not yet advanced enough to record this phenomenon clearly from Earth. However, astronomers are of the opinion that there is enough evidence to justify the birth of new gas giants.
This remains an important discovery. Scientists can collect valuable data to learn and understand how exactly a planet is created out of its protoplanetary discs. In a few years, we might come to know the origin of our own solar system.
