The third quarter of 2016 that ended on December 31st surprised the Electronic Arts with massive earnings that exceeded the expectations of analysts. The game publisher has Battlefield 1 to thank for this impressive record. This successful game marks the entrance of the company in the industry of first-person shooter game for the first time in history. The product was officially launched on October 21, 2016. In just three months, Battlefield 1 managed to attract 249,053 buyers in Japan alone.
Today, the Electronic Arts company posted its third quarter earnings that brought good news for the company. The total gain until December 31st was of $1.15 billion which is $80 million better than the same period of time last year. Moreover, the American video game company revealed a general loss of only $1 million, which is a big improvement since last year, when the same figure was of $45 million. Another high milestone for the company was recorded in the sector of full-game downloads. From this source, there was a $355 million during one financial quarter, which is 2.5 times higher than two years ago. On the other hand, the company scored a revenue of $140 million in this sector last year.
While it didn’t disclose the number of sales each product obtained, the game publisher officially declared Battlefield 1 as the main success of the organization. The game is the first EA product that is based on the first-person shooter concept. This move made the company a fierce competitor in this particular market. Their game was in an open race with other successful productions such as Watch Dogs 2 from Ubisoft, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare from Activision Blizzard. Battlefield 1 has now a player community that is 50% larger than what Battlefield 4 had before.
Moreover, FIFA 17 was another strong point in the marketing strategy of the game publisher. In 2016, this was the most successful console game in the world even though the company didn’t disclose how many sales it got. All that is known in this area is that there were more than 10 million players who tried FIFA 17, but this number includes the demo version also. Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes managed to get a new record with an average play time of 155 minutes a day per player.
