Battlefield 1 is a major contender at the Game Awards 2016.
The Game Awards celebrate the best video games on the market, no matter their producing company, or public appeal. Now that the nominees list for the Game Awards 2016 edition is out, it is obvious that they will continue the tradition of honoring gameplay over CGI.
No Man’s Sky would have probably been nominated game of the year if Hello Games did not fail so epically, spoiling the image of indie producers everywhere. Now, instead of the space odyssey that broke the hearts of millions, the nominee list is sprinkled with Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Blizzard’s Overwatch.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with the two games as both have gained a solid fan base, and proved times and times again that they deserve every recognition they got.
Let’s not forget that Overwatch was surrounded by as much hype as No Man’s Sky, millions of people pre-ordering it. Also, Blizzard was shocked to discover that adult websites already featured pornographic content revolving around the game’s characters a few hours after Overwatch was officially launched.
Sony also heavily marketed the fourth installment of Uncharted, the marketing campaign including a special edition Uncharted PlayStation 4 complete with controllers and headsets.
The surprise of the year where Oxenfree, which landed a nomination for Best Narrative, and Inside, a very promising indie project.
Battlefield 1 also gained a couple of nominations, as well as Mafia III, DOOM, and Thumper. The sixth installment of Civilizations was only nominated for Best Strategy Game, despite its outstanding reviews.
The Call of Duty franchise is completely missing from the Game Awards 2016 nominees list, a hint that the game’s sci-fi makeover does not please the fans.
