The chairman of the United States Federal Communications Commission, Ajit Varadaraj Pai, has his seat confirmed since January 23, 2017. He enjoyed a successful professional career as a lawyer for the Department of Justice, from where he moved on to the U.S. Senate, and Verizon Communications. Since 2011, he has been working for the FCC as commissioner. Among his first moves will be to activate FM radio on smartphones. At the moment, users have no other choice than to use Wi-Fi or mobile data to enjoy a good playlist or podcasts on their phones.
Ajit Pai has just called on the North American Broadcasters Association to take the necessary measures to bring back FM radio among mobile users. According to a report employed by Pai, only 44% smartphones can offer such a music service to its owners. The rest of them have no other choice than to turn to streaming services over the Internet to satisfy their musical appetites.
Pai regards FM radio as more than a constant source of music. For him, this service is a key tool that keeps a country informed of events of national interest in real time. FCC Chairman declared during the Future of Radio and Audio symposium that in the case of a catastrophe that puts down cell networks and Internet, the radio would remain the only line of communication. This way, citizens will find out easier where to head for help and how to mitigate their problem. He ended his statement with a research finding according to which the radio audience surges after natural disasters such as fires, floods, tornadoes or hurricanes.
On the other hand, Ajit Pai does not agree with government decision to determine officials to integrate the FM radio service by force. However, he hopes to persuade the key players in this field through his sensitive data and assertive demands to change future regulations. Having this extra informative source will allow users to avoid having their personal data exposed. This is because Republican senators are urging Internet Service Providers by law to provide them details about their clients.
Ajit Pai is a strong believer in the dominance of radio. This service is a powerful tool of information that harnesses the three powers of the digital world, which are local, mobile, and social. Before the Facebook era, people expressed their personal beliefs on air which helped radio stations to shape the local communities and bind the members stronger between them.
