Twenty-seven years after a ‘killer clown’ carrying flowers and balloons fatally shot a Florida woman at her front door, investigators were able to identify and arrest the killer.
In one of the most bizarre cold cases Florida has ever seen, Sheila Keen Warren, 54, was taken into custody in Washington County, VA, for killing her husband’s ex-wife, Marlene Warren, 40, in 1990.
The sheriff’s office said they found the suspect 5 miles from the Tennessee border. Until her extradition for trial to Florida, she’ll stay in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail, authorities said.
Any murder’s horrific. It doesn’t matter whether you’re wearing a clown costume or not,
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office said in a press release.
After saying that it took 27 years for justice to be served, authorities underlined that murderers are never safe.
A Strange Murder Case
Warren was one of the prime suspects in the killing from day one, but prosecutors lacked the necessary evidence to charge her. After nearly 3 decades, they used state-of-the-art DNA technology to reexamine the evidence. The case was reopened three years ago.
The victim was shot in the face after she answered the door to a woman wearing a clown suit and a clown mask. The clown was holding flowers and two balloons. One of the balloons read ‘You’re the greatest!’. When Marlene Warren went to take the flowers, she was shot in the face. The clown didn’t say a word, according to witnesses.
One day after the murder, the then-spokesman for the sheriff’s office Bob Ferrell said the case was “the strangest thing” he had seen in his entire career. Ferrell had been serving in law enforcement for 19 years.
Investigators also suspected Michael Warren, Marlene Warren’s husband at the time, because the couple had a rocky marriage. Sheila was working for Michael at his rental agency, and they were having an affair.
