Despite the fact that women were not allowed to become doctors until a few decades ago, a new study finds that they are better at this job. A recent study focused on how well patients respond when it is a female doctor or a male doctor.
This study showed that people who were treated by female doctors had better survival rates and fewer chances of readmissions. People who were treated by male doctors had lower survival rates. This doesn’t mean that men are not good doctors; it just means that female doctors are treating their patients differently.
In order to conduct this study, the records of more than 1.5 million people were analyzed starting 2011 and up to 2014. The study showed that the people who were treated by female doctors had lower chances of dying within 30 days of admission. When it came to male doctors the numbers showed that patients were more likely to die compared to those treated by women.
The researchers mentioned that if male doctors had the same results as female doctors there will be fewer deaths. The scientists also mentioned that there could be up to 32,000 fewer deaths every year. The researchers said that they weren’t expecting to see that big difference.
“The gender of the physician appears to be particularly significant for the sickest patients,” added one of the authors.
This is the first time researchers have focused on this topic. There is no other study that compares the way patients act and respond to male and female doctors. Moreover. this study was the first to discover that patients treated by women have a 4% lower risk of dying prematurely in comparison to those treated by male doctors.
The researchers were not able to find out why this is happening. Despite this, previous studies showed that women tend to follow clinical guidelines better than male doctors do. Women also tend to be more communicative and kind. Furthermore, female physicians are not afraid to ask for help from their peer when dealing with a complicated case. The way a doctor acts can influence the patient too.
What is your opinion about this study? Do you believe that the gender of the doctor is important?
