A sleeping toddler was saved from being hit by a stray bullet, thanks to the family cat.
According to WPMT, on Thursday morning a stray bullet pierced through the window of the Sipe family’s home, in York, Pennsylvania. The projectile punctured the couch and then hit Opie, the Sipe family’s feline.
At first the kid’s mother, Angelica Sipe, was too shocked to realize what had happened, but when she regained her wits she immediately checked her son Daemire and realized he was still fast asleep. Opie, however, had been badly hurt as the shot passed through his body: the bullet had entered his head, then went out his neck.
Afterwards, the shot bounced back into his shoulder, to exit through his armpit rib and ricochet into a couch. It was there that the dangerous projectile got stuck inside a pillow, coming to a stop just inches away from the child. It was obvious then to Mrs. Sipe that Opie had sensed the danger and risked his life to save her son from what could have been a brutal death.
Although the feline’s wounds initially seemed life-threatening, and the owners had the option to put Opie down, they decided against it. They soon found out that in fact the damage had been limited the cat’s mucles, and Opie received treatment at an emergency vet clinic.
The ginger feline has stitches and a drainage tube, but it is currently expected to make a full recovery. As the saying goes, cats have nine lives and Opie’s story reinforces this idea.
’I am thankful for my cat and am in any way possible going to make sure he comes back home where he belongs. He is my hero’, declared Mrs. Sipe, still overwhelmed with gratitude.
Since medical costs for Opie’s care have been quite steep so far, exceeding $1,000, and there will be a follow-up appointment on Monday, the family started a GoFundMe page to help pay the bills. So far, more than $2000 have been raised in support of the hero cat.
The Sipe family is now planning to move to another neighborhood, because they no longer feel safe in their home. A police investigation is currently underway to determine who fired the shot, but so far no potential suspects have been identified and no other injuries have been reported.
