Mortality is an irreversible process that brings the life of every creature to an end. As humans are the only beings that are conscious about death, we have to learn to accept it for the course of our lives. However, science have gone so far in its groundbreaking evolution, that it might be ready to create the first Fountain of Youth. In reality, this will be a pill that has the power to trigger DNA repair.
The Answer to DNA Repair Is NAD+
As people age, their cells lose their ability to reproduce themselves as well as they did when they were younger. Thus, cells don’t have the same vitality anymore to trigger DNA repair, and this makes way to cancer risks and cell decay.
However, a team of researchers at the Harvard Medical School conducted a study to understand how cells are getting old. Thus, they focused on the molecular chain of procedures through which cells are healing their broken DNA. This way, they managed to track down the exact element that helps cells in their activity.
It turns out that the answer scientists were looking for are a vitamin. This is called a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide or NAD+ for short. This coenzyme is in charge of controlling the procedures involved in DNA repair.
Scientists Will Proceed to Human Trials This Year
At this point, scientists proceeded to test their findings under lab conditions. They selected a group of 20-month-old mice. This age is the equivalent of up to a 70-year-old human. Scientists gave some of the mice a boost of NAD+, called NMN. They noticed that the medicated subjects had a better activity at the level of their cells. Their DNA started recovering quicker from the damage made by aging and radiation.
“Their DNA repair activities went up to youthful levels, and they were more resistant to radiation and should, therefore, be more protected against cancer and aging itself.”
The recovering process lasted up to a week. The results were positive enough to earn the research its own human trial. The new series of tests will start in the following six months in Boston. This discovery has the potential to create effective drugs for some of the worst enemies of people, namely cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.
NASA is one party extremely interested in this research. The space agency plans a two-year spaceflight to Mars. Over this span, their astronauts will be exposed to massive levels of radiation. The new vitamin can protect them from severe cell damages.
