Facebook sources on Friday pointed out that a big data center equipped with mega computer servers, hard drives, processors and other heavy equipment has been designed in central Iowa. The media was made to visit this mega facility which is located in an area of 476,000 square foot. It is situated at Altoona just near Des Moines.
This center will be online and will have live traffic and is likely to have equipment’s through which Facebook pages are assembled. Tom Furlong, the vice president of site operation for Facebook observed that as different users get distinct results when they navigate through Facebook pages, a lot of servers are needed to run the show effortlessly.
A large amount of data including photos, videos, comments and posts are stored on these servers and their safety and privacy is a key priority for Facebook. The new facility will make managing these tasks a lot easier.
This data center has 75 employees, as of now. A majority of these are mechanics, electricians and other technical personnel who handle logistic operations at the center. A new data center is under construction in a nearby facility which will be completed by 2015.
Though Facebook remained non committal on the money it has spend on commencement of this data center but sources indicate that the data center is worth over $300 million. Noticeably, the state authorities have given $18 million in tax credits and property tax for the facility has been exempted for another 20 years.
Facebook has been making earnest efforts to connect with users and this facility improvement can be seen in this light only.
