Cancer patient mistaken with suspect was handcuffed.
Erin Peters, 35-year-old breast cancer patient, was handcuffed after she was mistaken for a fugitive. She was stopped Friday in front of Idaho Walmart by members of the North Idaho Violent Crimes Task Force. It seems that Erin was looking very similar to Whitley Evenson, an 18-year-old girl. The teenager was charged with killing her baby in September 2015.
After the treatments, the cancer patient shaved her hair and she looked like Whitley Evenson. The task force members searched in her purse, her phone and even on her Facebook account. FBI officials explained they are really sorry for what happens. However, they said that many times suspects are lying to avoid being arrested, so they had to be sure she isn’t the one they are looking for almost a year.
It seems that the task force was informed Evenson could be at that Walmart. They questioned Erin Peters for almost an hour after they were sure she was not the one they wanted to arrest. However, they managed to arrest the real suspect at the same store, later that day. She will be sent to Jackson County Missouri after being charged with second-degree murder.
They were looking for the suspect since she did not appeared for a court hearing. It is hard to think that a mother was able to kill her own baby. Unfortunately, cases like this happen every year and most of the suspect are teenagers who get pregnant by mistake.
The cancer patient was shopping for her daughter when she was handcuffed. She tried to explain to the officials that she was not a suspect and gave them all the information they needed to prove that. Peters was diagnosis with breast cancer in January. She had a double mastectomy in August. While fighting a hard battle, she decided not to file a lawsuit against the task force. However, she wants them to admit they were wrong and apologize.
This is not the first time when a thing like this happens. A few years ago, a school teacher named Melissa Huckaby tried to explain to people that she is not the one who was accused of raping and killing a child. The issue was more difficult when she was mistaken even by the national shows.
The officials should pay more attention before accusing someone, especially when they are not sure that person is the one they were looking for.
