This year’s edition started on Sunday and will continue until September 4th for nine days of artful and musical experiences. Estimations placed 70,000 burners in the Black Rock Desert, Nevada who are participating in this celebration of life.
The 2017 theme is called ‘Radical Ritual.’ The choice of this year’s voice followed a unique feature of the new generation. Today’s youngsters are actually the first people who had the chance to grow outside religious dogmas.
Therefore, their spiritual identity is still an empty sheet of paper that they can choose to populate with the ideals they believe in. As a result, artists were invited to adorn the empty desert with ritual processions, temples, spiritual visions, icons, and godlike imageries.
Meteorologists Expect Temperatures to Rise above 212 Degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday at Black Rock Desert
The result translated into dozens of art installations. Some of them were created from the sheer sand of the desert as visual experiences. Others involved immersive techniques. The center piece is a temple that hosts the wooden man that is to be burned. The edifice commemorates the Golden Spike that marked the opening of the first transcontinental railroad in America. This temple is located in the center of a round, symmetric structure.
However, the psychedelic sensations were disturbed by Mad Max inspired scenes where people had to wear goggles and masks to face dust storms on Tuesday. More than that, meteorologists are expecting temperatures to exceed 212 degrees Fahrenheit over the weekend.
