Body odor has been a problem among us humans for quite some time. We eat different kinds of food, and we do a lot of activity that makes us perspire. And by sweating, our clothes get dirty, thus they start smelling. Sometimes the smell is not harmful at all. But, being stuck with that same smell worsening day by day for a matter of months in a not so large space might be a major problem to any of us.
One can only imagine how bad the odor gets in the International Space Station where six men and women are basically stuck with each other for a long enough time for their body odor to do more than just bother them slightly.
To prevent exactly this, NASA has employed a kind of tactic to keep the ISS from smelling. Astronauts from the ISS say that there are a lot of things that can make it smell bad up there. Even dirty clothes that aren’t dried properly, just like at any home create a bad odor.
NASA has designed two separate systems – a micro purification unit to remove dirt particles from the ISS service module and also a Trace Contaminant Control Subassembly for the same exact functions to be performed in a laboratory.
Astronauts also say that, although these machines are used, there are still some smells that cannot be removed.
