Monopoly has become a cult board game throughout the world that has just let its fans decide the next token designs.
Monopoly is a popular board game created in 1903. The intentions of its creator were less about entertainment and more about education. The game wanted to prove the accuracy of Henry George’s theories. It was also designed to show that rewarding wealth creation generates more benefits than allowing monopolists under weak constraints. In today’s world, the board game became a significant part of world’s cultural background. While there were no recent upgrades to the game, now you can vote for their traditional tokens to be changed into modern shapes.
Whenever people are in the mood for some Monopoly, they start off by negotiating with their friends and family their own tokens. These tiny game pieces are used to represent their owners throughout the game and mark their fictional location across the hotels and other facilities of Monopoly’s board. However, things are about to change.
For the first time in over 80 years of activity, the asset of game company Hasbro will go through a major redesign process. The company launched a new website, VoteMonopoly, where visitors can enter in different rooms from what seems to be a Monopoly mansion. Each room has its own collection of tokens that visitors can select. There is a total of 56 designs, and each person can vote for only eight ones. Everyone is invited to participate in the voting process, and they have until January 31 to submit their choices.
Those who would feel nostalgic if the tokens are changed with new ones have the option to select the same traditional pieces. The eight present tokens in the standard game edition are wheelbarrow, battleship, shoe, dog, cat, top hat, race car, and thimble. However, the company is known for its token replacements throughout the years. The dog design is a replacement for a purse, the wheelbarrow was initially a lantern, while there are other retired shapes, like a cannon, horse and rider, iron, and a sack of money. Nonetheless, this voting is the first time Hasbro allowed the public to replace all their tokens at the same time.
The new designs have either a modern or retro edge. Everyone can choose eight of the 56 proposed designs that vary from a T-rex to an F1 race car. Other shapes are a penguin, cowboy hat, rotary phone, sliced bread, fire, surf boat, helicopter, monster truck, and others. The top eight tokens that received most of the votes will be made public on World Monopoly Day, March 19.
