A 12-year-old boy succumbed to his serious injuries after getting shot by the police in Cleveland on Sunday, officials said.
The unidentified young boy had on Saturday just waved and further pointed a pellet gun at a Cleveland city recreation center when a police officer shot at him.
Timothy Kucharski, the attorney for the family of the deceased, said that the child has received serious injuries in his abdomen after which he succumbed to his injuries.
A 911 call recording showed a witness informing the police dispatcher at the Cudell Recreation Center park about someone with a pistol pointing towards people.
Notably, the witness has told the police dispatcher that the firearm was “probably fake”, adding that it was scary for the people.
According to the police, they had asked the young boy to raise his hands but he failed to follow the orders after which he was shot.
“The suspect did not comply with the officers’ orders and reached to his waistband for the gun. Shots were fired and the suspect was struck in the torso,” the police statement said.
The preliminary investigations suggested that the gun, which was recovered from the boy, was just an airsoft-type replica gun that very much resembled like a semi-automatic pistol.
Soon after the boy was shot, he was rushed to MetroHealth Hospital where he underwent surgery on Saturday. He was in critical condition and died early Sunday.
The two cops, who were involved in the unfortunate shooting incident, went on administrative leave. One of them received an ankle injury and was treated at Fairview Hospital.
