Tumblr has brought a microblogging platform for all creators since 2007. Yahoo Inc. acquired the website back in 2013 and now the platform is ready to receive a new massive update. Tumblr will enhance its strongest point which is that of enabling personal storytelling in a multimedia format. The new features will make it possible for users to adorn their content with photo stickers and filters. This addition will bring new ways of expression to its more than 329 million blogs.
Today, Tumblr released two innovative tools that will enable its bloggers to enhance their content with photo stickers and filters. Yahoo Inc. can benefit greatly from this new update. The organization can follow the Snapchat monetization model, and allow publishers to create their own designs. Their creations could promote their own brand, but the service will require a fee to deliver the stickers to Tumblr bloggers. For the time being, the new update is available only on mobile, be it iOS, Android or iMessage apps. From today on, users will be able to decorate both their photos and their GIFs with exciting designs.
As far as the photo stickers are concerned, they are only a little over 100 versions for now. Some of the designs include objects, symbols, frames, and even text messages such as Yes and OMG. The new tool has its own icon located at the bottom of the screen. Once users press it when they are in the middle of creating a new photo or GIF, they will be able to see the selection of stickers and choose the ones they want.
While the interface is simply based on a scroll through concept, it will probably get quickly outdated. Tumblr intends to add new concepts each month, which will make it harder for users to find what they want in the increasing list. The producers are already working on special designs to celebrate upcoming events such as Valentine’s Day or Black History Month. From that point on, they will probably have to come up with a more intuitive interface.
As for the photo filters tool, it works similarly to the stickers one. When users are on the compose screen, they can select the magic wand icon and choose their favorite filter. Contrary to expectations, the new tool did not follow the paved path made by its competitors like Instagram. Tumblr filters offer users a method to turn their content into creations similar to pop art concept. The app went for bold statements with bright colors of orange, red, pink, green or purple.
