A strange Russian object has been tracked in the space by the Western space agencies and military observers, which has revived the fears of a defunct Kremlin project to destroy the satellites.
There is huge speculation that the mysterious object is actually the ‘Object 2014-28E’, an effort by Russian military for the collection of space debris.
The world is being speculative and suspicious of the mysterious object as it has raised the concerns over space security owing to the fact that Russia has not made any declaration regarding any such launch and the object is also not on a specified path.
“Whatever it is, [Object 2014-28E] looks experimental,” Patricia Lewis, a space security expert and research director at Chatham House (a London-based think-tank) was quoted as saying by a leading financial daily.
Lewis further said, “It could have numerous functionalities: some civilian and some military. One possibility is that it is some kind of grabber bar. Another would be kinetic pellets which shoot out at another satellite. Or possibly there could be a satellite-to-satellite cyber attack or jamming.”
It was launched in May this year through a rocket that carried three other packages. However, the launch of the strange satellite was not declared.
Meanwhile, the US military is monitoring the movement of the object under the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
The US has built its first fighter satellite Istrebitel Sputnik in the early 1960s. But the programme was called off officially.
