Skype for Business was released in April as a replacement for Lync, which had joined the Skype family. It has been limited to desktop users, but it seems it will be available for iOS and Android too, in the near future.
While the normal, standard Skype application is set by default to show you recent conversations, the new app will make detectable the contacts, recent conversations and upcoming meetings on your dashboard.
Contacts can be searched on the dashboard by first name, last name, e-mail, alias or phone number, while the iOS app will import the user’s phone contacts in the search field too.
Concerning upcoming meetings, users can toggle between information, or access “Quick Join” to enter an ongoing session instantly.
Larger buttons have been implemented, regarding the calling feature. These are the mute, add participants and, respectively, manage your calls buttons. There’s another enhancement that is worth mentioning, that enables users to see both video and text simultaneously on their device (or just switch between them, as usual).
It has been confirmed that Skype for Business will replace the Lync 2013 application on Android and iOS later this year.
Jared Goralnick, principal group program manager for the Skype for Business team, said that they enhanced Skype’s simplicity through the new app for Android and iOS, while creating a new, more user-friendly dashboard interface for easy navigation between contacts, calls and meetings, and that he and his team updated the In-Call and In-Meeting experience.
According to Goralnick, “Skype for Business mobile apps work for anyone on Lync Server 2013, Skype for Business Server 2015 and Skype for Business Online.”
The new dashboard correlates the contact search bar, upcoming meetings and most recent conversations all in one place.
IT admins can sign up for the Skype for Business for iOS and Android Preview, as the Skype team said their goal is to allow as many people as possible to try out their new product before making it generally available. They can access the new version of Skype on a website dedicated to the preview.
Potential users are advised to apply by Friday, August 14th 2015, to be taken into consideration in their first group of participants. IT administrators will be notified via email of their acceptance.
