Air travel was among the few situations when people couldn’t make phone calls. For several hours, people have some quality moments to disconnect from their routine and stay in the clouds. Some individuals assume that this is the best time to look around and get to know your traveling colleagues. However, this week the US aviation regulators admitted the consideration of allowing plane passengers their phone calls.
This Thursday, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) stated that it intends to make things a little clearer for airline customers regarding their phone usage. In the near future, ticket agents and airlines will have to inform their clients beforehand if their next flight is phone calls free or not.
Until an official decision, DOT wants to hear from actual passengers also. The federal government is clearly considering giving green light from voice calls during flights. However, the first thing they want to take the pulse of the public and see if they approve or not.
The laws that kept phone calls at bay within a flying airplane were protecting the safety of all passengers. These mobile devices are actually emitting radio frequencies whether intended or not. This can prove devastating as avionics, the systems pilots use for navigation and communication, rely on radio waves. The mobile devices can interfere with the plane system and stop them from working in case of a phone call on the board.
However, the new technology may allow people to avoid this type of situation. At this moment, almost any smartphone, whether it is iPhone or Android, have the option to make phone calls via WiFi. This new technology doesn’t have the power to harm avionics the same way as classic voice calls could do. Moreover, most important airlines nowadays offer in-flight WiFi. This service can be either free or paid.
The WiFi suggestion has been on the records since 2014. However, there has been a lot of controversy regarding this subject. On the one hand, the passengers have the right to know whether their plane allows the use of voice calls or not. On the other hand, the confinements of a cabin of such small dimensions can turn any conversation into a source of noise. Some passengers have to deal with the consequences of jet lag in case of trans-meridian travel. They need rest and silence for recovery.
For now, this new decision is in the hands of the United Airlines. The authorities are interrogating customers and employees regarding their opinion on this matter. So, we too turn to you. How would you feel to have your plane colleagues talk over their phones during your flight?
