This happened after a shooting was initiated in the city’s South Ward, on 19th Avenue and South 16th Street on Sunday, the 11th of May 2015, at around 7.45 p.m, according to police officials. Hundreds of people gathered to see the bikers in front of the Springfield Ave. clubhouse of the Newark Knights MC. The event was sponsored by the Newark Knights motorcycle club and it is held every year on Mother’s Day to mark the beginning of the motorcycling season.
As bikers had started to put on a show, two people started shooting within the crowd, killing a person and injuring other three. Witnesses say that the person who died was just a teenager, but the police did not release details regarding age and identity, merely saying that the victims’ ages ranged from 15 to 29. The other three people who were wounded during the shootout were not reported to have been severely wounded . They were all taken to the hospital, where they received medical treatment. People who were nearby said that they had heard between 8 and 12 shootings. The person who died received three bullets in the head and one in the knee.
Officials from the Newark Police Department did not immediately release an official declaration related to the incident and neither did representatives of the Knights’ motorcycle club. Nevertheless, the Knights had asked people attending the event not to misbehave the day before, on a Facebook post on their page: “THIS YEAR’S PROTOCOL WILL BE THE SAME AS LAST YEAR’S. NEWARK’S FINEST WILL BE ON HAND, IN AN EVEN LARGER PRESENCE THAN LAST YEAR, TO DEAL WITH ANY WILDING OUT, WHEELIES BURNOUTS OR OTHER UNLAWFUL ACTIVITIES.” The photos following the event did not hint at the tragic incidents but only displayed photos of people having fun and enjoying the bikers’ tricks.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka came to the crime scene on Sunday night and talked to the reporters. He admitted that there is greater need for police patrolling the streets but pointed out the fact that the enforcement department is too short-staffed to have officers maintain discipline during such a huge event. “And so we can’t have events like this until we’re prepared to deal with them,” he told WABC. He also mentioned that the event gets wilder every year and it is very difficult to keep things under control.
A spokesperson with the Essex County Prosecutor’s office revealed that the area is now packed with homicide detectives. Perimeters have been set in the area and investigators are looking for evidence.
