Good news for all of you e-mail fans out there! Gmail has introduced the long awaited Undo Send feature that will prevent lots of embarrassing moments from now on.
E-mail users have been asking for an unsend button ever since the e-mail was invented. For years and years people have kept wondering why Google would not take their suggestions into consideration and turn the undo send button into reality.
Back in 2008, Google announced that it was working on it and obviously, the fans got excited and they thought that it would probably take a few months before the long awaited feature would be introduced.
Well, as we all know, those few months have turned into a few years and now, seven years later, the Undo Send feature makes its way out of project purgatory and into the Gmail menu, for everybody to use.
All you have to do in order to get a way out from embarrassing e-mail related situations is to enable this wonderful second chance bringing feature. You have to click the little cog-like icon on the top right corner of your Gmail menu, then go to Settings menu.
Then, you need to be into the General menu from Settings and just scroll down until you find the enable Undo Send icon and click it. Once you have enabled this feature, you actually get to choose the amount of time that Google will give you henceforth to reconsider your sent e-mail.
And you can get 5, 10, 20 or 30 seconds. Weirdly, everybody seems to keep scrolling in order to find some longer period out there, because even 30 seconds could be somewhat of a short period of time to notice your mistakes.
While the classic situation where some nasty e-mail makes its way to your boss could be avoided in this 30 second period of time, because upon seeing the recipient and the word “Sent” next to it is bound to make you gasp and get feel cold sweat dripping on your back.
But what about the other classic e-mail mishap, that involves a considerable amount of alcohol, some repressed feelings that are going rampant in your head after the booze has conveniently set them free and a very sappy or angry e-mail that gets sent to your ex? Somehow, 30 seconds do not seem enough to realize the big mistake that the e-mail represents.
Well, it seems that the Undo Send isn’t exactly a miracle worker, but since it took seven years for this version to be developed, nobody is in the mood for more waiting. So, if Google sees it fit to include more time for people to reconsider their sending decision, than so be it. If not, this is still an enhancement that nobody saw coming any more.
