The police have not released any details related to the suspect, but it is believed the murderer is already in their custody for other criminal acts. It would be the first time he is accused of murder.
According to Connecticut’s Chief Attorney Kevin T Kane, releasing the suspects name so early in the investigation would be completely unethical, but he promised that people have all the reasons to feel safe, as no other suspects are expected to be involved in the slayings.
Chief Kane released a statement on Monday, the 12th of May 2015, saying that the bodies had been found in a wooded area behind a strip mall from New Britain, Hartford. They regarded the area as the killer’s “burial site”, mainly because the bodies of four other women had been found in the same spot in 2007. The women found back then were identified as 40 year-old Jane Menard, 53 year-old Diane Cusack and 23 year-old Joyaline Martinez. All of them were known to have had problems regarding substance abuse and they used to frequent the same neighborhood downtown New Britain. Diane Cusack was not reported missing because she had lost touch with her family a long time before she was murdered. Their remains were discovered by a person who was hunting in the area at the time.
The latest victims’ remains were discovered with an FBI dog, after the officers had come to the site over and over again, year after year in order to find more clues and more remains. The investigators revealed the name of the latest victim to the reporters – Melanie-Ruth Camilini, from Seymour. She was last seen in 2003, just like the other women who were linked to the same case.
This case could become as shocking as that involving serial killer Michael Ross, who murdered eight women and girls in both New York and Connecticut in the early 1980s and received his penalty 25 years later, in 2005. So far, he is the most notorious serial killer in Connecticut. Nevertheless, the new case might soon rival it if the theory proves true.
Authorities say that the 28th of April 2015, when the body parts of the four new victims were found, was a sad day for their families. In spite of that, discovering what happened to them gives them some kind of closure. As far as the other people are concerned, the news provides relief that there is no danger of something similar happening to them.
It might seem a freaky coincidence, but the strip mall in New Britain had been a dumping site for victims in the past. In 1995, the body of a teenager named Elizabeth Honsch was discovered in the area as well. Her mother’s remains were found several days later in Tolland State Forest, in Massachusetts. Both Elizabeth and her mother, Marcia Honsch had died from shots in the head. Marcia’s husband was accused of having killed both of them, dumped their bodies and started afresh with a new family. However, he did not admit to the murders and is waiting for his trial.
