Blizzard have announced the sixth expansion to World of Warcraft, the world’s most played MMO, named Legion.
The expansion was announced at the ongoing Gamescom event in Koln on Friday, and is set to bring the player’s maximum level to 110. Probably the most exciting feature is the release of a second hero class named Demon Hunter, which was long anticipated by fans of the game, with some even initially thinking it would be released with the game’s first expansion, The Burning Crusade, back in 2007.
However, Blizzard did not make clear under what circumstances will the Demon Hunter class be available. The single hero class in the game to date, the Death Knight, required players to have at least one character of level 55 or higher before they could create one; a similar level requirement is to be expected, but new or returning players will have the possibility of buying a level 100 boost, like in the previous expansions Warlords of Draenor.
Legion will also bring a whole new continent to the fray for players to level up between 100 and 110 called The Broken Isles, which was previously referenced in Warcraft lore but was never playable in any of the series’ games. The new continent will be spearheaded by the floating magical city of Dalaran, which will return to its role as a hub area which it last held in 2008’s Wrath of the Lich King.
In addition to this, Blizzard are also reworking parts of the game’s PvP. According to the announcement, PvP perks will now be available through a new honor system, with players being able to gain prestige which in turn unlock unique weapons and artefacts. The expansion will also include a host of new artefact weapons which will allow players to customize legendary weapons.
It remains to be seen whether this expansion manages to instill the much needed life into the game, which has went down to just 5.4 million subscribers. This represents the lowest global population the game has had since before its first expansion, the Burning Crusade, and almost half of what it managed to amass at the launch of last year’s Warlords of Draenor, which despite gaining positive reviews seemed to be shun by the player base. However, even with population numbers going down, World of Warcraft still remains the most popular MMO in the world, a title it has held for the last decade.
